Nelson County, VA 

A local vineyard wished to re-envision and expand their tasting room facility.  BHA helped them home in on a solution that would add a second level tasting room offering panoramic views of the extensive grounds as well as sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west.  The tasting room is accessed via a new stair.  Heavy timber treads - mirroring the existing building’s timber structure - give way to a wood-lined shaft that extends down from the second floor.  Tensioned vertical steel cables act as a guard, recalling the adjacent tensile lines in the fields beyond that serve as an armature for thriving vines.  The result is a thoughtful stair that integrates product and display w/ the otherwise utilitarian function of vertical access.
