Create an intimate and materially rich place in which to shower under the stars after a day’s work on the farm: this was the project brief from the client. The shower is sited strategically on the south side of the home to ensure its continued use into the swing seasons, to take advantage of visual privacy afforded by a large swale in the landscape, and to serve as a new access point to the home’s primary suite. A thin-profiled wood bridge connects the main home’s timber shell to the shower’s structure composed of thermally modified slats, recalling a garden arbor. A corrugated weathering steel shroud wraps the interior of the frame, serving as both structural resistance for lateral loads and as a curtain-like privacy screen. Simple materials and a natural, earth-toned palette complement the existing log home well.
