Crozet, VA
A family of seven - who frequently enjoys hosting even larger groups still - needed a home that could balance both the spatial demands of entertaining with the privacy and intimacy required of home life. In response, we looked to the area's agricultural heritage for a inspiration. A series of gabled structures form the private building blocks around which public spaces flow. As a result of this spatial arrangement, kitchen, dining, and living spaces – the typical realm for entertaining guests – become almost outdoor pavilions, open, light filled, and visually connected to the rolling hills of the site. Private spaces such as offices, storage, and bedroom suites are contained within the more opaque gabled structures. A generous roof deck w/ an outdoor fireplace sits atop the entertaining spaces below. Large openings and windows form the veil between public spaces and the outdoors, while smaller, punched windows serve the traditional barn-like volumes, merging modern and tradition into a unified whole.
