highland house

Charlottesville, VA

This under-appreciated, low-slung 1960’s ranch home was in desperate need of renovating due to failing systems, degrading exterior materials, and insufficient levels of natural light.  BHA completely re-configured the interior of the home while still minding economy of systems and cost.  The primary entertaining spaces were gutted, and a series of new wood-clad elements were inserted, serving as privacy screens, storage elements, and a new kitchen island.  Black walnut live edge slabs create countertops and benches where engaged with newly inserted wood elements.  The primary suite was likewise re-configured.  Furthermore, without adding any interior square footage to the home, BHA was able to successfully add an additional 4th bedroom & office nook while increasing the apparent scale of the home.  Large windows were added throughout to connect the home back to its forest-like surroundings, while being careful to maintain visual privacy from adjacent neighbors.  In addition, a new roof and blown-in insulation were added to greatly increase building performance and thermal efficiency.  The carport was converted to an attached garage as well.
