Collaborating with Thrive Architecture
The project brief simply required providing storage, a hydration station, and restrooms for a larger track renovation at Charlottesville High School. Having a program often relegated to the underside of bleachers or tucked discreetly out of site, the proposed comfort station instead sensitively becomes both gateway and destination. By placing the required functions in a masonry volume along the south end of the site and strategically tying into a similarly scaled existing masonry storage building with a perforated steel shade canopy, an exciting new L-shaped structure emerged. The resulting spreading masonry arms bracket a new lawn space which is canted at a slope to allow ease of viewing. Due to its adjacency to the newly renovated track, this new folded landscape serves as an informal counterpoint to the nearby grandstand, and it has become a hub in its own right during field events.
