A family had outgrown their existing farmhouse in Albemarle county. They desired to expand their utility space, re-imagine the home's entry sequence, add a painting studio, and an additional bedroom suite. By combining the studio and bedroom suite into a barn-like structure and offsetting it from the existing house, the new structure could double as a proper accessory dwelling, should the need arise in the future. By pulling this “art barn” away from the house, the resulting interstitial space became activated as both a new, generous entry and mud room as well as a dining space that opens both to the kitchen and directly to the outdoors. In a nod to the architecture of the existing farmhouse, we extended the existing front porch and wrapping it around to the southeast. The family now enjoys more extended time outdoors in their bucolic setting.
